Duo slagwerk & piano
Aoi, Aoi ano Sora... to Umi... is inspired by Paul Signac's "Cassis, Cap Lombard" (1889), a Pointillist painting that uses distinct dots to create a serene coastal scene. Composed for multi-percussion and piano, the music mirrors the experience of viewing the painting from different distances.
The composition begins with a tranquil, blue-hued coastal landscape, reflecting the initial impression of the painting. As it progresses, the music delves into a percussive exploration, representing the multitude of dots that become visible upon closer inspection. These dots, reminiscent of countless heads, add intricate detail and complexity. The piece then transitions to a middle-distance view before rapidly zooming in again, highlighting the dynamic interplay between the whole and its parts. Throughout, the piano and percussion create a rich soundscape, with the piano evoking the painting's overall beauty and the percussion representing its individual dots.
This piece invites listeners to experience the music in layers, much like viewing a Pointillist painting—first as a unified impression, then as a complex interplay of elements, and finally as a harmonious blend of both perspectives.
The title, "Aoi, Aoi ano Sora to Umi," translates to "That Blue, Blue Sky and Sea," capturing the essence of the serene sky and sea in the painting.
